Dave Beer story

BEER, DAVE
A man like Dave Beer needs no introduction to the dance scene. He was involved in house music from the heady early days of 1988, throwing house parties after spending his formative years at art school, which next to music, is his true love in life. Often suspended but scraping through Art school, he then travelled the world for many years as a tour manager for indie dance acts such as Sisters of Mercy, That Petrol Emotion and Pop Will Eat Itself. Touring with the likes of The Ramones, Motorhead and with the rock’n’roll ethos
totally embedded, he came home in 1988, the summer of love, to discover acid house, bitten by the bug of the Hacienda and the illegal rave warehouse parties. David had found his vocation and started throwing parties of his own everywhere from disused libraries to old mills in the middle of the country. The parties were too popular for their own good and created far too much police attention, caused by the provocative imagery that advertised these now legendary parties!

As the rave scene exploded to crazy heights and with the Criminal Justice Bill looming, backtobasics was formed in 1991 in an old gay club as a kick-back to the whistle blowing, white glove wearing, vicks rubbing and dummy sucking scene of the time. No one expected what was about to happen. He started Back to Basics with his best friend Ali Cooke, who tragically died in a car accident only a couple of years later. They started the club as a place for their friends, who were tired of travelling to clubs like Venus in Nottingham and Flying in London and of course the Hacienda. But the whole thing just exploded, within months they were turning away a thousand plus. This Northern club started to create attention not only in England but all over the globe. While he remained at the forefront of club promotion he kept one hand on his art and his work on youth culture which was exhibited in various galleries including The Barbican. Dave has also been a TV presenter on several music programmes while running backtobasics as well as being very busy in the studio producing records under his psyeudonm “Out of Order”.

Dave has remixed the likes of David Bowie and Chrissey Hind in the past and now runs his own recording studio in the heart of Leeds, giving bands and DJ/producers alike a platform in which to record - now very important to the growing Leeds scene. With all this in mind, he still finds time for studio work and has recently been recording with New York based band The Glass. Dave’s musical style reflects a more open-minded music policy than those DJs with their heads stuck up their own arses who had appeared at the turn of the millennium.

Dave’s record collection and DJ style, while always maintaining his true identity as a four-to-the-floor house man, demonstrates his wide range of influences from funk to punk to electro house, but always keeping it very party with the motto “House music all night long” emblazoned in his ethos. This is why he is a favourite with the fashion set and is always invited to play summer festivals such as Glastonbury, Bestival etc. With Back to Basics still going strong, now in its 18th year, there seems no sign of letting up as Dave and his renogade soldiers carry on their passion and their brand of hedonistic house into the future. Selected guests at UK Festivals – Glastonbury, Bestival, Creamfields, Homelands, Homelands Scotland, Tribal Gathering - as well as being resident at his own club back to basics in Leeds and at We Love at space on the terrace in Ibiza. Dave has found time to guest at places around the globe including recently playing to 40,000 people opening up for Whitney Houston.
